We're So Back

I’ve come full circle.

After vacillating back and forth on this (and having been a little chastised) I can announce definitively that I’m back to using completely free software. I’ve also tweaked the look of this page!

Shortly before the turn of the new year, I switched to an iPhone 16 and a MacBook Pro. I also moved my self-hosted mail server to ProtonMail and purchased an iPad Air. My reasons for this are personal and I’d rather not disclose them, but the gist is that I needed reliable and convenient tools — OpenBSD and GrapheneOS just didn’t make the cut.

The itch to switch back never really went away, though, and I found that having Apple stuff wasn’t that much more convenient anyway, introduced a ton of anti-patterns in my behavior, and contravened my principles. So, as much as I am able at present, I’m back to using Linux on my computer. I’m also using the GrapheneOS phone that Apple “graciously accepted” with a trade in value of $0.

I’m hanging on to the iPad because I use it for chanting at church. Is there probably a libre equivalent? Probably, but this is what the other chanters are using and it spends 96% of its life on airplane mode anyway. (I think God can probably forgive a little bit of proprietary software.)
